Combat Promotional Sketch
The final sketch selected for representing "Combat".

Combat Banner
I needed a banner for our booth at cons. In a picture we needed to capture people's interest and tell them about an aspect of the game. This is the final version of the "Combat" Banner.

The Revenant
One of the opponents in an early story of the game. This sketch was done to contrast against the work of another artist I was working with. When I saw it I promptly fired the other guy and hired Rogier to do the rest of the monsters.

Alternate Revenant
One of the alternate revenants that doesn't appear in the game. There was a lot of back and forth on the head/helmet. Ultimately it felt this one was too "military" whereas the chosen one conveyed the idea of a caster.

Parent's Home Sketch
We all come from somewhere. Your parents are farmers and you can visit them. Quite a bit of game takes place at their location, so we needed a backdrop for it.

Parent's Hut Winter Night
There are 8 versions of the parent's home: each season and day/night. We needed the picture to show the rural nature of where the player grew up but also a coziness and warmth that we usually feel when visiting home.

Female Barmaid
One of the portraits for the civillians in the game. This one is loosely based on Tika from Dragonlance.

Mage Shop Owner
A portrait that conveys elegance and a little bit of danger. The mage shop owner is wealthy and possibly not to be trusted.

Bandit Leader Sketch
We went through several iterations for Bandit Leaders. This is an early sketch.

Bandit Leader Color
A color iteration as we searched for the right look.

Bandit Leader Color
Another iteration. Dropped the bladed shoulders to reflect better his quick athletic nature.

Title Screen Sketches
The title screen is a serious investment. In a picture it needs to convey what the game is about and capture someone's interest as they walk by.
The idea of raising a tower from the bones of the earth seemed a fitting metaphor for a young mage trying to make his way in the world. We explored many different camera angles to convey the scale and power of the scene.

Title Screen Sketch
And early sketch of the mage tower title screen. We were trying to nail down camera, scale, distance. This one looked quite promising.

Title Screen Sketch
The next iteration of the title screen showing a more "organic" magical rock formation idea.
The idea is the mage is like a sculptur literally shaping the world to his needs.

Title Screen
The completed title screen.
What may not be obvious is the little touches:
The stream/waterfall represents the regular flow of time in the world suddenly being interrupted by the appearance of this mage.
The fallen trees represent the collateral damage caused by the presence of the mage and his moving into the world.
Finally, the scampering deer represents the upheaval of life because of the mage's choices. No matter what the mage does, some will be on the losing end. They can either run, or fight back. But there is no going back to way things were.

Old Civilian Male Sketches
Finding the right look for an old man. Not too gandalfy.

Old Man
Not old enough!

Old Man
There we go!
